Biography presented during plaque dedication:

Private John McLaren Scott was born at Kenmore in the county of Perth, Scotland in August 1890. He was one of two sons and a daughter born to James and Christina Scott.

His father was killed in 1903 and this placed a heavy burden on the family which lead to John migrating to Western Australia in 1911. He worked as a farm hand in the Bruce Rock district, where it is believed he acquired the nickname ‘Jock’.

John enlisted in the AIF at Perth in May 1915 and after initial training at Blackboy Hill military camp, embarked at Fremantle in September 1915 bound for Alexandria, Egypt.

He then moved to Tell El Kebir and was taken on strength of the Australian Camel Corps in February 1916.

In November 1916 he moved to 1 Australian Battalion, Imperial Camel Brigade.

Private John McLaren Scott, service number 1629 of 1 Australian Camel Battalion, died of wounds on 21 April 1917 at 53 Casualty Clearing station, Deir-El-Belah, Palestine.

He was 26 years of age. He is buried at Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.

His plaque is placed alongside Private George Armitage and Private Herbert Thomas Noel Edwards, of 1 Battalion Australian Camel Corps, who served with Private John McLaren Scott.
