Biography presented during plaque dedication:

Private Peter Yore was born in May 1884 at Rathendrik, County Meath, Ireland. He was the youngest of seven children born to George and Elizabeth Yore, who lived in Rathendrik.

He was educated at Carnaross national school to the age of twelve. At age 23, Peter immigrated to Blackpool, England in search of work and there he met Delia Reilly, whom he later married.

In 1909, he began working his passage to the ‘new world’ of Australia and some three years later, through hard work, purchased a house in north Fremantle.

He obtained work on the Western Australian government railways and worked as a guard.

In June 1916, he enlisted at Albany and carried out his initial training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp; he was allotted to 22 reinforcement of 11 battalion.

In November 1916, he embarked at Fremantle aboard HMAT Argyllshire and arrived at Devonport in January and was posted to 3 training battalion. Peter proceeded to France in May and joined his battalion.

In August and September 1917, the unit was involved in heavy and bitter fighting at the Hindenberg Line and later, what became known as the third battle of Ypres.

Private Peter Yore, service number 6843 of 11 Battalion, was killed in action on 20 September 1917 at Polygon Wood, Belgium.

He was 33 years of age and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.

His plaque is located alongside comrades who died on the same day, Private James Bettles and Private Frederick Dudley.
