Biography presented during the plaque dedication:
Private Roy Wilfred Jamieson of 32nd Australian Infantry Battalion was born at Bendigo, Victoria, in August 1895 to John and Catherine Jamieson. He had two sisters. The family moved to Boulder and resided in Bendigo Street. Roy attended school at Boulder central. After leaving Boulder, he worked at Gordon and Gotch in Perth and later at Piesse brothers at Katanning.
After receiving permission from his father, he enlisted at Katanning in July 1915 and was posted to one of the two Companies of 32 Battalion that were raised in Western Australia. In September, after training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp, they moved to South Australia and joined with the other Companies. The Battalion embarked in December at Adelaide aboard HMAT Geelong bound for Suez. Training continued at Tel el Kebir until they embarked on HMT Transylvania at Alexandria in June 1916 and six days later arrived at Marseilles. The Battalion fought its first major battle just three days after they entered the front-line trenches.
Private Roy Wilfred Jamieson, regimental number 972 of 32 Battalion, was killed in action at Fleurbaix, France, on 19 July 1916. He was 20 years of age and was never found.
His official memorial is his grave in the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, Lille, Nord Pas de Calais, France, where his headstone has no personal inscription. His Place of Association is Boulder, Western Australia.
He is the relative of Private Alfred Richard Witheridge (killed in action).
