Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private William Barnsley was born on 25 September 1892 at Norwood in Adelaide, South Australia to William and Alice Barnsley.
His was an extended family of three half-brothers, three half-sisters and three full sisters.
Following his schooling he was employed as a pearl diver/storeman in Broome, from where he enlisted in the army in April 1915.
After training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp and posting to 28 Battalion, he embarked on HMAT Ascanius at Fremantle and sailed in June 1918 for Alexandria, Egypt.
In September 1915, following further training, he embarked on HT Ivernia as part of 7 to 10 Reinforcements group.
Private William Barnsley, service number 1016, was killed in action on 3 October 1915 at Lower Cheshire, Gallipoli Peninsula. He was 23 years of age.
His name is recorded on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey.
His plaque is located alongside his relative Private Robert Thompson who was killed in action in June 1918.
