Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Beresford Arbuckle of 12 Battalion was born at Burwood Melbourne in 1892. He was one of six sons and two daughters born to Robert and Elizabeth Arbuckle.
The family moved to Western Australia in 1897 and took up land to grow vegetables in Osborne Park and later Balcatta.
Details of his education and/or sporting activities are not known. However, his post school employment was with the firm Regan and Arbuckle who were bakers.
Beresford Arbuckle enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in September 1914.
Following initial training, he embarked on HMAT Medic at Fremantle in October 1914 and sailed with the initial convoy of Australian troops in November.
The battalion, which was part of 3 Infantry Brigade, proceeded to Egypt, arriving there in early December and undertook further training.
3 Brigade was the covering force for the Anzac landing on 25 April 1915 and was therefore the first ashore at around 4.30 am. 12 Battalion was heavily involved in establishing and defending the front line.
In August, two companies then participated in the attack on Lone Pine. The battalion served at Anzac until the evacuation in December.
Private Beresford Arbuckle, service number 773, died of wounds received at Gallipoli on 20 June 1915. He was 23 years of age.
He is buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey.
