Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Able Seaman Allan Lawrence Rowe of HMAS Sydney was born in November 1914 at Murchison Street, Subiaco.
He was one of five sons and a daughter born to John and Alice Rowe of Shenton Park. He attended Rosalie Primary School and Perth Boys High School.
Allan liked all forms of water sport and, after leaving school, worked as a salesman, a farmhand and later studied pharmacy.
All the boys served in World War 2, predominantly in the Navy.
Allan enlisted at Fremantle in April 1940 and went to HMAS Cerberus for his initial training and gained his Able Seaman rating.
In September, he was posted to HMAS Sydney which had recently returned from a successful campaign in the Mediterranean where she had sunk the Italian cruiser Bartolomeo Colleoni.
Allan married Jessie Smith in September 1941 at Manjimup and they had barely two months together. They had a daughter, Ellen.
Able Seaman Allan Lawrence Rowe, service number F3029, of HMAS Sydney was killed in action in the Indian Ocean on 19 November 1941.
He was 26 years of age and his name is on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Plymouth, England.
