Biography presented during plaque dedication:

Private Roy Andrew Bruce of 28 Battalion was born in 1893 in the town of Broken Hill, New South Wales.

His parents were Sarah and Andrew Bruce who, soon after, moved to the corner of Egan and Mile Streets in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

Roy attended the Kalgoorlie state school and secured a job as a barman in a local hotel. The family had now grown to five boys and three girls.

Roy joined the army in February 1916 and was sent as a reinforcement to 28 Battalion. He allocated four fifths of his pay to his mother for her support while he was away.

After initial training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp, the reinforcements embarked aboard the HMAT Suevic in June 1916 for the United Kingdom.

After further training in England, Roy joined the Battalion in the field in France.

During the battle at Ypres, Belgium Roy was severely wounded and moved to 55 General Hospital at Wimereux, France.

Private Roy Andrew Bruce, service number 1723, died of wounds received in action on 30 October 1917.

He was 24 years of age and is buried at Wimereux Cemetery, France.
