Private Albert Lydiate of 46th Australian Infantry Battalion was born in July 1892. He was one of five sons and three daughters, born to Sarah Anne and William Lydiate who lived at Lion Mill near Mt Helena in the Swan Valley. He was educated at the local state school and then later employed as a contract labourer in the Guildford area. He was not married.
Albert enlisted in the Army in November 1916 and after initial training at Blackboy Hill was assigned to 46 Battalion as part of 6 to 9 Reinforcement Group. He then embarked on HMAT Persic in December 1916 at Fremantle bound for the war in France. The Battalion served in France and Belgium in 1917 and 1918 in various battles culminating in an action near Lihons in the Somme Valley in August - September 1918.
Private Albert Lydiate, regimental number 3171, of 46 Battalion was killed in action at Lihons, France, on the 18 August 1918. He was 26 years of age.
His official memorial is his grave in the Fouquescourt British Cemetery, Fouquescourt, Picardie, France, where his headstone is inscribed with “Beloved son of Mr & Mrs W Lydiate of Guildford”. His Place of Association is Guildford, Western Australia.
He is the brother of Private Frederick William Lydiate (killed in action).
