Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private John Albert Woods was born at Victoria Plains, near New Norcia, in February 1893. His parents were Samuel and Mary Woods of Three Springs.
There were six sons and four daughters in the family and they lived at Three Springs, later moving to South Street, Fremantle.
After he had finished his schooling, he worked as a labourer.
In September 1914, John enlisted at Helena Vale and, after training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp, was posted to 'E' Company of 16 Battalion.
This battalion was raised in Western Australia in September, six weeks after the outbreak of the war.
Three quarters came from this WA and the rest from South Australia. For final training, they all moved to Victoria and became part of 4 Brigade.
The battalion sailed from Melbourne in December 1914 aboard HMAT Ceramic for Egypt, arriving there in early February.
They then moved to Gallipoli and landed there late in the afternoon of 25 April.
Private John Albert Woods, service number 456 of 16 Battalion, was killed in action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He was 22 years of age.
John is remembered at Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsular, Canakkale, Turkey.
Two of John’s brothers also served in World War 1 and returned to Australia.
