Biography presented during plaque dedication:

Private William Henry Spargo was born at Tibooburra, New South Wales in September 1895. His parents were William and Ann Spargo.

It is not known when the family moved to Western Australia, but he attended school in Coolgardie. He was later employed as a butcher and slaughterman, also in Coolgardie.

William enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Perth on 30 August 1915 and, after training, was posted to 11 Battalion.

He was part of 8 to 12 Reinforcement group and embarked at Fremantle on 22 November 1915 on the RMS Mongolia. He served with the unit in France.

Private William Henry Spargo, service number 3968 of 11 Battalion, was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 22 July 1916. He was 20 years of age.

His name is listed on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Picardie, France.
