Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Sergeant James Neville Lynas of 211 Squadron, Neville as he was known, was born in Subiaco in June 1918 at Nurse Lloyd's private hospital.
He was the eldest son of Richard and Florence Lynas. Richard was an accountant in Coolgardie and later moved with his family to Perth.
Neville started school at Rosalie Primary, then went to Nedlands Primary School and later to Claremont Central where he gained his Leaving Certificate in 1935.
He was a very keen sailor and sailed with the Perth Flying Squadron in his boat 'Westward Ho'.
He joined the AMP Society as a clerk in 1936 and worked there until he enlisted in the RAAF in September 1940 at Subiaco.
In late 1940 and early 1941, Neville trained at various bomb, gunnery and navigation schools in Victoria and New South Wales.
In June 1941 he married Patricia and in July he embarked for the Middle East.
He later joined 211 Squadron which in December 1941 was transferred to Java and Sumatra. He flew in a Mark IV Blenheim medium bomber, number Z7584.
Sergeant James Neville Lynas, service number 406200, was killed in action over Banka Strait on 6 February 1942. He was 23.
