Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Lance Corporal Richard Gurry of 16 Battalion was one of two boys and five girls born to Richard and Jane Gurry.
The family resided at Kapunda in South Australia. Richard junior was born at Kapunda in 1887 and attended school at the Dominican convent there.
It is not known when he left to come to Western Australia but that he went to Kalgoorlie and worked as a miner.
He enlisted at Kalgoorlie in January 1915 and started training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp with 5 Reinforcements for 16 Battalion.
In April 1915, he embarked at Fremantle on HMAT Hororata, bound for Gallipoli and taken on the Battalion strength in May.
After spending some time in hospital with bronchial pneumonia, he sailed from Alexandria for Marseilles in June 1916 aboard HMT Canada.
He was appointed to lance corporal in July, was wounded in August and then re-joined his unit.
Lance Corporal Richard Gurry, service number 2000, was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 31 August 1916. He was 30 years of age.
His plaque is located alongside Private Bob Baker, also of 16 Battalion who died on the same day, and his nephew Private John Lithgow of 16 Battalion.
