Biography presented during the plaque dedication:

Private Theo Varian of 51st Australian Infantry Battalion was one of five sons and one daughter born to Karl and Mary Varian of Leake Street, North Perth, Western Australia. He attended school at North Perth and later worked as a labourer.

He enlisted in Perth in January 1916 and was assigned to B Company of 44 Battalion, which was raised at Claremont and formed part of 11 Brigade. After training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp, he embarked on HMAT Suevic in June 1916. After arriving in England, Theo was sent to 3 Training Battalion and then in October 1916 transferred to 51 Battalion at Etaples. He spent some time in hospital with infected feet and other ailments and re-joined his unit in February 1917. He was given leave in England and then returned to duty.

Private Theo Varian, regimental number 279A of 51 Battalion, died of wounds in France at 4 Casualty Clearing Station on 6 May 1918. He was 32 years of age.

His official memorial is his grave in the Pernois British Cemetery, Halloy-les-Pernois, Amiens, Picardie, France, where his headstone is inscribed with “For the homeland he was fighting and in honour’s name he fell”. His Place of Association is North Perth.

He is the relative of Trooper Heinrich Carl Ludwig Ruwoldt (killed in action).
