Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Herbert William Wylde was born in 1890 and he had five sisters and four brothers.
At the time of enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), he was a labourer living in Guildford. It was stated that his next of kin was his father, William, who resided in Bayswater, Western Australia.
His grand-parents, Joseph and Amelia, arrived in Western Australia in 1856. Herbert’s father, William, was born in 1859 and he married Sarah Taylor in 1880. His brother, George, also joined the AIF and survived the war.
Herbert trained at Blackboy Hill Military Camp before moving out with the rest of the battalion in the first fleet of Anzac ships bound for Egypt and further training before landing at Gallipoli.
Private Herbert William Wylde, service number 166, was confirmed as killed in action, Gallipoli on 2 May 1915. He was 25 years of age.
His name is inscribed on the Lone Pine Memorial on the Gallipoli peninsula.
