Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private George Alfred Archibald of 28 Battalion was the son of William and Eliza Archibald of Yarloop. He was born at Ballarat in January 1892, one of five boys and three girls.
The family moved from Ballarat to Maryborough, Queensland in the late 1890's where George attended school.
They moved back to Ballarat where George attended Macarthur Street school and was in the school cadets.
They then moved to Yarloop, Western Australia arriving there in 1908. George served a five-year apprenticeship as a boilermaker at Millars Timber Trading Company at Yarloop. His pastimes included rifle shooting, cricket and boxing.
He enlisted at Blackboy Hill in March 1915 and was posted to 28 Battalion. In June 1915, after finishing training they sailed from Fremantle aboard HMAT Ascanius for Alexandria.
After further training in Egypt the battalion embarked on HT Ivernia for Gallipoli.
He was wounded and transferred to HS Grampian and transported to Tigna Hospital at Malta.
Private George Alfred Archibald, service number 558, died of wounds received at Gallipoli on 3 October 1915 at Tigna Hospital at Malta. He was 23 years of age.
His plaque is placed alongside that of a family relative Sergeant Angus Lyon who was killed in action in Pozieres, France in July 1916.
