Biography presented during the plaque dedication:
Trooper Leyshon Villis of 10th Light Horse Regiment was born at Mountain Ash, County Glamorgan, South Wales, in May 1893. He was one of three sons and four daughters born to George and Mary Anne Villis of Hayes Farm, Sully, near Cardiff in Wales. He emigrated to Western Australia in 1911 and lived with an older sister and her husband in Boulder.
He worked as labourer in the district and enlisted at Kalgoorlie in November 1914. He then commenced training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp and was assigned to 2 Reinforcements of 10 Light Horse Regiment. In February 1915, the Regiment sailed on HMAT Itonus from Fremantle for Alexandria and, from there, they sailed to Gallipoli arriving in early May 1915. Leyshon was wounded in the head and neck later that month and transferred to a hospital ship. On recovery in August, he returned to his unit then the Regiment was involved in the Battle of the Nek.
Trooper Leyshon Villis, regimental number 748 of 10 Light Horse Regiment, was killed in action at Walker’s Ridge, Gallipoli on 7 August 1915. He was 23 years of age.
He has no known grave and his official memorial is the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, where his name is shown on Panel 11. His Place of Association is Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
