Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Peter Douglas Barrett of 11 Battalion was born at Fremantle in 1885 and he had one brother and a sister.
They were the children of Peter and Annie Barrett and they resided at Wittenoom Street, Collie.
After he finished school, Peter was employed as a telephone linesman and he also served with 5 Western Australia Militia.
Peter enlisted at Collie in October 1914 and began training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp.
He embarked on HMAT Itonus at Fremantle in February 1915, bound for Gallipoli.
He was in hospital in Malta with influenza and rheumatism in August 1915, then returned to Egypt and re-joined his unit at Serapeum.
The unit left Alexandria for Marseilles and arrived there in April 1916 and then commenced fighting in France.
Private Peter Douglas Barrett, service number 1309 of 11 Battalion, was killed in action at Fleurbaix, France on 30 May 1916. He was 30 of age.
His mother wrote this epitaph:
'He has borne his cross
He has gained his crown
Though lies in a far-off grave
We think of his noble life
A duty done
Manly, unselfish and brave.'
