Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Thomas Arthur of 11 Battalion was born in Port Germein, South Australia in 1890, the son of Matthew and Jean Arthur and he had three brothers and two sisters.
The family moved to Wubin in August 1908 with their widowed mother and took up land. They overcame innumerable hardships to survive on the property known as Mia Moon which was 36 miles from the railway at Gunyidi.
Water was carted 18 miles by horse drawn cart and a lot of their food was in tins.
Thomas enlisted in April 1916 and was posted to 21 Reinforcement of 11 Battalion. After training at Blackboy Hill the battalion embarked on HMAT Suffolk at Fremantle in October 1916 bound for England. After further training in Durham they embarked on the SS Victoria for France in February 1917.
Private Thomas Arthur, service number 6467, died of wounds received at Fliers, en route to 2 Australian Field Ambulance Station on 25 February 1917. He was 27 years old.
His plaque is placed alongside comrades from the same battalion, Private Alexander Blake and Captain Harold Teague.
