Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Joseph Woodhead of 51 Battalion was born at Honley, Yorkshire. He was one of five sons and a daughter of John and Alice Woodhead of Noggerup, the family having migrated from England to Noggerup in 1911.
Joseph had worked in the cotton mills and as tram driver before leaving England and when he came to Australia he worked in a timber mill.
His wife, Martha and their children, Richard, John and Madge followed later.
He enlisted in September 1915 at Blackboy Hill and after training embarked on HMAT Medic at Fremantle in January 1916, arriving at Alexandria in February.
In April he transferred from 7 Training Battalion to 51 Battalion and during April and May was in hospital with a hernia.
Joseph re-joined the battalion and they left Alexandria for Marseilles in June 1916 and went into action in France.
Private Joseph Woodhead, service number 3312 of 51 Battalion, was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 3 September 1916. He was 44 years of age.
