Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Private Gilbert Robert Barr was the eldest son of 14 children, of whom only seven survived early childhood. He was born at Balaklava in South Australia in 1879.
His parents were Andrew and Rosella Barr who lived at Doodlakine, Western Australia.
In 1905, Gilbert married Emily Reeve, with whom he had five children and they also lived at Doodlakine. Prior to his enlistment in March 1916, he worked as a teamster.
He was posted to 19 Reinforcements of 16 Battalion and, after training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp, he sailed from Fremantle in August 1916 on board HMAT Miltiades for Plymouth.
Gilbert arrived there in September and was posted to 4 Training Battalion.
Prior to leaving for France he was in hospital with mumps and did not join his unit until December 1916. He then fell ill with influenza and finally re-joined the battalion in May 1917
Private Gilbert Robert Barr, service number 5995 of 16 Battalion, died of wounds at 2 Australian General Hospital at Le Havre, France on 31 October 1917. He was 38 years of age.
