Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Sergeant William Allen Godfrey of 27 Operational Training Unit, Bill, as he was called, was one of four sons born to Ernest and Edith Godfrey. He was born in Hughesdale, Victoria in May 1920.
The family moved to Western Australia during the Great Depression and lived in South Perth.
Bill's mother died soon after they arrived and later his father remarried to Gwen, who was a loving stepmother.
Bill attended school in South Perth and later trained as a survey draughtsman. He liked sport and was a keen cyclist.
He enlisted in the RAAF in December 1940 and after training at various establishments was posted to 27 Operational Training Unit at Litchfield in England.
Bill was the tail gunner in Vickers Wellington Z8785 which crash-landed after engine failure at the base.
Sergeant William Allen Godfrey, service number 406392 of 27 Operational Training Unit, died of injuries received in the crash on 26 February 1942. He was 21 years of age.
