Corporal Morgan Ernest Best WX5092 (1906-1942, born Geraldton, Western Australia) enlisted in the Australian Military Forces at Claremont, Western Australia, on 23 July 1940 and was trained at Northam, Western Australia. He was sent to the Middle East in May 1941 and taken on 2/28th Australian Infantry Battalion strength on 23 December 1941. On 23 July 1942, he died of wounds sustained during the First Battle of El Alamein, Egypt, which raged from 1 July 1942 to 27 July 1942.
Corporal Best’s official memorial is his grave in the El Alamein War Cemetery where his headstone is inscribed with “For ever we’ll remember happy days spent together”. His Roll of Honour is Perth, Western Australia.
His honour plaque in Kings Park was dedicated by his family on 5 December 1948. He is the son of Clement Best (1870-1946) and Adelaide Best (nee Gilgen) (1878-1932) and husband of Helen Maud Best (nee Hancock, later Byrne) (1908-1979) of Maylands, Western Australia. The Plaque Applicant is his wife.
