Biography presented during plaque dedication:

Corporal Lewis John Broad of 11 Battalion was born at Manarra Station, Mingenew in August 1894. His parents were Edward Broad and Ellen Jane Broad (nee Oliver) of Mingenew and he had six brothers and two sisters.

He did not attend school but was home schooled with tutors and governesses. He worked on his parents’ farm until he enlisted with his mate William Richard Beckett (a station hand from Mingenew) 12  January 1916.

After training at Blackboy Hill Military Camp he embarked at Fremantle on 17 April 1916 on HMAT Aeneas bound for Suez.

The unit then proceeded to England and joined 3 Training Battalion. After training in Egypt, he proceeded to France on 29 August 1916, where he joined 11 Battalion.

Lewis was appointed lance corporal 9 February 1917, then wounded in action (right knee) on 13 April 1917.

He was taken to 56 Casualty Clearing Station then to 6th General Hospital. Lewis had convalescence leave in Etaples before rejoining 11 Battalion on 25 May 1917.

Lewis was promoted to Corporal on 28 July 1917, the Battalion moved to Belgium and was involved in the 3rd battle of Ypres.

Corporal Lewis John Broad, service number 5356 of 11 Battalion, was killed in action in Polygon Wood, Belgium on 20 September 1917. He was 23 years of age.

His body was never found and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial.

His honour plaque is co-located with his friends, the Beckett brothers.
