Biography abstract:
Hubert Edwin Whitfeld (14/3/1875 - 31/7/1939) was born in Sydney and educated at Sydney Grammar School and Sydney University, where he gained a B.A in Classics and Philosophy.
After teaching for a couple of years, he returned to university to gain Mining and Metallurgy and Civil Engineering degrees in 1902.
He came to Western Australia in 1902 and worked on goldfields, practising as a mining engineer until 1912 when he took up a position in charge of the Mining and Engineering Departments at Perth University.
During WWI, he was employed by the British Ministry of Munitions, working in the UK and USA.
Professor Whitfeld was Vice Chancellor 1925-27 and was the first full-time Vice Chancellor from 1927 until his death.
During his time at the University, it moved into the Crawley site, now known as UWA.
He worked for the establishment of residential colleges for males and females and received a CBE in 1933 for his service to education.
Professor Whitfeld was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee (Executive; Chairperson of the Education, Ecclesiastical and Social group) in 1929.
