Biography abstract:
Miss Marion Phoebe Holmes (29/9/1880 - 6/9/1966) was born in Adelaide, South Australia and known as Phoebe. She came to Western Australia in 1890 as a child, where her father, Henry Holmes, was appointed Manager of the Western Australian Bank.
They were housed in an imposing new building, built in 1886 on the corner of St Georges Terrace and William Street. The family lived in spacious quarters on the premises and Phoebe Holmes recalled watching horse-drawn traffic from her upstairs window.
Later the family moved to a large house in Cottesloe overlooking the ocean. This home was eventually sold to the Anglican Church and became known as 'Le Fanu House', a conference centre for clergy and holiday camp for groups of young people.
In 1929, Phoebe Holmes was president of the Ministering Children's League Convalescent Home at Cottesloe.
She was an active member of the Anglican Church and supported many organisations including the Karrakatta Club, University Women's College Fund Committee, the Empire shopping council and the League of Nations Union.
In 1931, she began her association with the Young Women's Christian Association which continued until her death.
Miss Phoebe Holmes was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee (Education, ecclesiastical and social group), and her father a member of the Kings Park Board, during Centenary celebrations in 1929.
