Biography abstract:

Robert John Lynn (14/3/1873 - 12/9/1928) was born in Stockton, New South Wales and was there, and in Newcastle, until leaving school at the age of 16 to work in a firm of wholesale merchants for eight years.

He came to Western Australia in 1896 seeking gold and tried mining for a year in Coolgardie. He was unsuccessful and moved to the coast where he settled in Fremantle.

Mr Lynn started a small shipping business which was involved in Collie coal. He was also interested in the mining side of the coalfields and with amalgamations over time became chairman of directors of Amalgamated Colliers WA Ltd.

In Fremantle, he became a councillor and member of the Fremantle Tramway Board. In 1912 he was member of the Legislative Council for West Province and he held this seat until 1926, when he did not seek re-election.

Mr Lynn was chairman of some eight companies, including Wesley Timber Ltd, Swan Portland Cement and WA Underwriters Ltd, and was a local director of the Bank of NSW.

According to an article published in the West Australian newspaper after his death in September 1928: ''he was a warm hearted philanthropist''.

His wife Ada (nee Turton) planted the Centenary tree in his honour, in recognition of his membership on the Western Australian Centenary Committee.
