Biography abstract:
Henry Diggins Holmes (3/2/1846 - 3/3/1931) came to Western Australia in 1890 to take up the position of Manager of the Western Australian Bank. He had previously been connected with the Bank of South Australia.
Under his management, and the impetus of the gold mining and subsequent rapid development of agriculture and pastoral resources, the bank expanded greatly. In 1869 there were five staff and no branches, which grew to 85 staff and 20 branches by 1896 under his leadership.
He built the heritage listed 'Le Fanu (formerly Banksia) House' in Cottesloe, a large federation Queen Anne style home that is a regarded as an example of a grand beachside home.
Mr Henry Holmes was a member of the Kings Park Board and his daughter, Miss Phoebe Holmes was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee during Centenary celebrations in 1929.
