Biography abstract:

Arthur Lovekin (12/11/1859 - 10/10/1931) was born in England and migrated to Australia in 1879.

He worked for one year as a surveyor in Victoria before joining the 'Melbourne Age' as a journalist.

He moved to South Australia in 1883 on the 'Register' and with T. Harry as public shorthand writer (1884-5).

He came to the Fremantle 'Herald' as senior reporter in 1886, which was taken over by the 'Daily News' and by 1890 he was company secretary and director.

By 1894, he was editor and managing director and was sole owner from 1916 until he sold the paper in 1926.

Mr Lovekin was a member of the Legislative Council for Metropolitan (1919-1931).

He was a foundation member of the first Kings Park Board and on the honorary committee which preceded it.

In 1918, he succeeded John Forrest as president, a position he held until his death in 1931.

Arthur Lovekin devoted himself to Kings Park and spent freely of his time, resources and energy for its preservation and development.

The scheme to plant the Honour Avenues was his initiative and Lovekin Drive is named after him.

Mr Lovekin was also chairman on the Children's Hospital Board and established the Children's Court, where he served on the bench for almost 20 years.

The Hon. Arthur Lovekin MLC was President, Kings Park Board in 1929 during the Western Australia Centenary celebrations.
