Biography abstract:
William Ewart Gladstone Salter (1867-1935) was born in Bendigo, Victoria and worked as a journalist, first on the 'Bendigo Independent' and then the Melbourne 'Herald' for 20 years.
He gained the reputation as a brilliant crime reporter wherein he found a clue and followed it, ultimately leading to the arrest of the murderer Deeming in Southern Cross.
He went to the 'Argus' for six years and then joined the Perth 'Daily News' in 1915 where he was chief sub-editor before spending many years as its editor.
Mr William Salter was a keen cyclist in Victoria and he represented that state in chess competitions.
His brother Edward's son (his nephew), Private William Edward George Salter has a plaque on the Honour Avenues by the only oak tree left of the original plantings in 1919.
Mr Salter was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee in 1929.
