Biography abstract:
Frederick Royston Mercer (17/12/1886 - 14/1/1987) worked in country newspapers in Albany and Katanning, from compositor to sub-manager and sub-editor before he joined the 'Daily News' in 1913.
In 1926, he was appointed Government publicity officer in the Premiers' Department. That same year, he was given the task to travel to eastern Australian capital cities to advertise the Centenary of Western Australia and encourage visitors' to come to the celebration.
A special railway excursion fare was offered (available for 42 days). He also encouraged participants in the Sydney to Perth air race and generally to come and meet the people on the other side of the continent.
Mr Mercer was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee (Publicity) in 1929.
