Biography abstract: Mr Matthew Joseph Smith (9/5/1885 - 6/9/1955) worked as a labourer in Northam in his youth.
He married Lily Monican Toleman (from Victoria) in Perth in August 1913 and was working as a plumber in Queens Park by 1917 with a young son 'Monty'.
In 1926, the family took up a farm in a new settlement near Lake Brown in the Mukinbudin district.
They had a large family and Matthew's wife, known as 'Mrs. L.M.' was highly respected in the area. She was left for long periods on her own with the children to run the farm and was the only woman from the area to be called to a 1933 Royal Commission into the Agricultural Bank.
Mr Smith was working as an educational officer and living in Bayswater in 1954 before he died aged 70.
Mr M.J. Smith was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee (Publicity group) in 1929.
