Biography abstract:
Mr Victor Desmond Courtney (27/5/1894 - 1/12/1970) was born at Raymond Terrace in New South Wales.
His family moved to Western Australia, where his father was managing editor of 'Greenbushes Advocate'.
On leaving school in 1909, Victor went into public service and in 1911 took a cadetship with the Sunday Times.
In 1918, in partnership with JJ Simons, he became managing editor of a sporting weekly 'The Call'.
Eventually Courtney and Simons took over Western Press Ltd, which included the Sunday Times and became managing editor.
After JJ Simons death in 1948, Courtney became chairman and managing director. He established a chain of 30 country newspapers. In 1958, he sold Western Press to Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd.
Mr Victor Desmond Courtney was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee (Publicity group) in 1929.
