Biography abstract:
George William Simpson (1867-1931) was born in Mitcham, South Australia. On leaving school, he entered an Adelaide commercial house and was selected to go to London on his principal's behalf in his early 20s.
He came to Western Australia in 1895 and after a year was appointed as shipping clerk and storekeeper in the Public Works Department. By 1899 he was in the position of store manager.
In 1904, he became chairman of the Government Tender Board, of which he had been a member, and in 1908 he was Controller of Stores.
In 1911, Mr Simpson was selected as Royal Commissioner to inquire into the scarcity of artisans in WA. In 1913, with three others, he was on a Royal Commission into the State Shipping Service. In 1914, with two others, he carried out investigation into the Collie coal industry.
After 21 years in Government service, Mr Simpson was appointed Public Service Commissioner in 1917. His term of office was extended in 1924 and he retired in 1931 due to ill health.
Mr GW Simpson was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee (Chairman, Finance group) in 1929.
