Biography abstract:
Athelstan John Henton Saw (1868-1929) was born in Perth, the son of Henry and Mary Ann (nee Syred) Saw and younger brother of William Saw.
He was educated at Perth Boys' High School and won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge where he graduated 1894 with MB, BS, FRCS Edinburgh. In 1895, he became senior surgeon at Perth Hospital.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), August 1916 as a major senior surgeon 14th Australian General Hospital, Egypt. He was a Lieutenant Colonel when discharged in 1919, when he also received an OBE.
From 1919-29, he was on the senate at University of Western Australia, Warden of Convocation 1916-17 and Chancellor 1920-22.
His political life started in 1915 as Member of Legislative Council for Metropolitan suburban province. He held this seat until his death in 1929. He was initially a liberal and then became a national.
The Hon. Dr Athelstan Saw MLC was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee (Education, Ecclesiastical and Social) in 1929.
