Biography abstract:

Alexander (Alec) Thomson (9/3/1873 - 18/11/1953) was born in South Shields, England and educated at Essendon state school, Victoria where he later worked as a carpenter and joiner.

He came to Fremantle, Western Australia in 1895 and two years later moved to Katanning where he founded the timber and hardware store Thomson and Melaney and built in the Great Southern district.

He was director of Katanning Flour Mill, founder of Katanning Fresh Air League, the Historical Society and Infant Health Clinic.

He was active in Silver Chain District Bush Nursing and a prime mover in establishing the Katanning swimming pool. He was president of Katanning Bowling Club and Katanning Club.

His political life began with Buckland Hills Board 1903-05, then Katanning Roads Board 1911-15. He represented Katanning as MLA 1913-30 and ML for Southern Province 1931-50.

He was Deputy Leader of the Country Party 1921-23 and Executive Leader 1923-30.

Mr Alexander Thomson MLA was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee (Country Organisation) in 1929.
