Biography abstract:
Ernest Augustus Lee-Steere (19/3/1866 - 22/12/1957) was born near Beverley, Western Australia and was educated at Newcastle state school.
He began work at 14 as a stockman and later overseer on his uncle's property 'Belele', where he became joint owner.
Following drought problems, he invested in mail transport between Nanine and Peak Hill, a local butchery and the Nanine general store which helped tide over fluctuations in the pastoral industry.
Over the years he acquired another eight pastorals (1920-34), one of which was 'Hawthornden'.
He was foundation member and president of the Pastoralists Association WA, WA Turf Club chairman (1919-40), director of WA Airways and president of the Weld Club.
He helped float the WA Worsted and Woollen Mills in Albany, the WA Meat Export Company and the Fremantle Freezer Works.
Knighted in 1948, he spent a lifetime in service to the State. In 1947, he donated a farm in Mingenew for a training ground for discharged servicemen.
He enjoyed watching polo but the Turf was his favourite recreation, where he did much to improve the standard of breeding and racing horses.
Sir Ernest Lee-Steere was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee (Executive; Agriculture and pastoral industry, mining, forest and marine products groups) in 1929.
