Biography abstract:
David Isaac Freedman (17/4/1874-24/6/1939) was born in Budapest, received a BA and Theological education in London and came to Western Australia in 1896.
Rabbi Freedman was a spiritual and humanitarian worker across religious affiliations but especially in organisations for children and the blind.
He was a lecturer in historical and literary subjects and an examiner for the University of London. He was instrumental in the establishment of the University of Western Australia.
As a freemason, he held various senior positions. He was described as a "patron of all sport which tends to develop the physical power of man without degrading his finer instincts".
He served as the Senior Jewish Chaplain to the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) 1914-18, which included time at Gallipoli, Egypt and France.
In 1924, he was President RSL of WA and from 1932-38 was a senate member of UWA.
Reverend Rabbi Freedman dedicated the State War Memorial in Kings Park in 1929 and was a member of the Western Australian Centenary Committee (Education, Ecclesiastical and Social group).
