Biography abstract:

John Michael Drew (17/10/1865 - 17/7/1947) was born in Northampton, Western Australia and left school at the age of 15 to be a telegraphist for two years.

He learnt journalism in Fremantle in 1885 and was sub-editor for 'WA Record', Fremantle from 1887-89.

In 1890, he started a vineyard and orchard in Northampton. He became secretary/manager of 'Victoria Express', later the Geraldton Express, was editor from 1892-1905 and owner from 1912.

He was strongly anti-federalist and backed conscription in 1899. In 1916 he became a member of the Holy Name Society.

From 1925-44, Mr Drew was a senate member of the University of Western Australia and for many years was a regular contributor to the Sydney 'Bulletin'.

He joined the Labor party in 1910 and was MLC for Central Province 1900-1918, and again 1924-47.

During his parliamentary career he was Minister for Lands 1904-05. At different times he was Colonial Secretary and Minister for Agriculture, Chief Secretary, Minister for Education, Health and North West. Mr Drew was leader of the Labor party in the Legislative Council 1910-36.

The Hon. John Michael Drew was Chief Secretary in 1929 during the Western Australia Centenary celebrations.
