Biography abstract:

Alexander McCallum (28/10/1877 - 12/7/1937) was born in Adelaide, South Australia and came to Western Australia in 1898.

He worked in the Government Printing Office, joined the Bookbinders and Paper Rulers' Industrial Union and was president of TLC in 1905.

He was elected MLA for South Fremantle (1921-35) and positions included Minister for Works, Water Supply, Sewerage and Draining, Labour and Trading Concerns (1924-30), Minister for Public Works, Labour and Water Supplies (1933-35) and Deputy Leader of the Labor Party 1930-35).

He initiated construction of the Canning Dam and reclamation of the Swan River foreshore.

The Hon. Alexander McCallum MLA was also part owner of the Captain Stirling Hotel.

Mr McCallum was the Minister for Works in 1929 during the Western Australia Centenary celebrations.
