Biography presented during plaque dedication:
Warrant Officer (class 2) Frederick Lodge Martin of 2/16 Battalion was born in Perth in December 1914 to Norman and Joan Martin of Cottesloe.
He and his younger brother, Flight Sergeant Dennis Martin, attended Scotch College, played rugby with Cottesloe Club and were members of the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club. They had two sisters - Jan and Pat (and Pat married Sergeant John Walrond).
After leaving college Frederick worked in office administration at WA Trustees. He lived at home and spent many enjoyable hours fishing with his father off the Cottesloe jetty in a small dinghy. He was engaged to be married to Beth Crombey.
He enlisted in the army in May 1940 at Subiaco and was posted to 2/16 Battalion which had been formed in April. After training at Northam the battalion embarked at Fremantle in October and arrived in Egypt in November.
They fought in Egypt and Libya, then returned to Palestine for the invasion of Syria and Lebanon.
Warrant officer (class 2) Frederick Martin, service number WX2741 of 2/16 Battalion, was killed in Syria at the Battle of Damour on 6 July 1941. He was 26 years old.
